Natural Psoriasis Treatments 

I have suffered with psoriasis for most of my life, if that wasn't bad enough, in my early twenties I started to have seizures, so I decided to do as much research and ask myself some soul searching questions like, what is the root cause of my psoriasis and what I need to do to correct it.

During my endless research, I have found out that psoriasis starts off from within and it can be a result of diet, lifestyle and too much stress and negative emotions.

Psoriasis has now been linked to a leaky gut, and many people are seeing big improvements through changing their diet.

Psoriasis seems to be a manifestation of an inward condition and although it may feel natural to treat it from the outside it seems that the long term solution lies from treating it from within and the place to start is to try and fix your leaky gut.

The first thing to be aware of is, each person is a different case and what might work for one may not work for another, so it may be a case of trial and error to try and pinpoint which foods are triggering your flare ups.

You may get setbacks on your journey to clear skin, but the key to success is persistence and perseverance.

A strong faith is also required, because you will also have the psychological side of things, often you will find when the sufferer no longer fears their psoriasis, they start to show signs of improvements.

Because although some foods seems to play a major role with psoriasis, stress also comes into play.

Stress and negative emotions causes toxins in the body, and toxins are claimed to be one of the root sources of psoriasis.

When someone firsts develops psoriasis, they start to worry, fear and obsess about it, for many it starts to dominate their whole life and thinking time, often destroying their confidence and self esteem.

This is not surprising, after all it is not very nice, but what you have to be aware of, the more you allow it to upset you and bother you, the more stress and fear you will create, which can make the problem even worse.

Focus on what you can do

Although it may seem hard, try not to give your psoriasis any negative attention, just see it as a temporary condition that you can and will cure.

The key is to try and treat the root cause of it, and if it starts off in the gut, then that surely is where the solution lies.

There are several things that you can do to help you reduce or even get rid of your psoriasis completely, one of those is through your diet and the other is to reduce your stress.

You may have been told that there is nothing that you can do to heal your psoriasis, but many have already successfully proven that you can manage and attain better overall skin, making them feel more body confident as well as looking slimmer and having more energy.

First off, I'll start by just listing bullet points

To start off with, if you want to have any sort of success with this, just like anything else, you have to stick with it, it's not a case of, for a few months I'll go without taking any of the potentially psoriasis trigger foods, then once it is clear you go back to eating all your trigger foods.

Because, if you're a psoriasis sufferer, although you can completely clear it, if you resort back to your old diet, then the chances are, you will soon start to see some flare ups, so if you're serious about getting rid of your psoriasis, then these new changes need to be implemented and stuck to. 

What I have found through endless trial and error is, the two worst things that triggered my psoriasis was, certain foods and stress, both of which cause toxins in the body.

I'll be honest, It has not been an easy journey, and it can be hard to stick at a psoriasis free diet, it is especially difficult when you're out and you want a meal or a quick snack, however the rewards are well worth it.

Because not only can you clear your skin, but, by cutting out some of the bad high in sugar and processed food and replacing them with high in nutrition, foods, it can boost your mood, increase your energy levels and much more.

I have had many setbacks and failures, but I was determined to regain clear and glowing skin, and after much trial and error, I now feel great and look great and I have my psoriasis under control.

This new healthy way of living needs to become a way of life.

Don't start thinking that you can just start just giving in to your cravings once you see signs of improvements, and go blinking crazy, 

Because this is the wrong way to think, trust me I should know, because I have cleared my psoriasis, many times, then I have relapsed and starting eating my trigger foods thinking that I can get away with it, only to find out a few days later my psoriasis had started to return. 

You may feel like you are stuck with your psoriasis for life, I know how you're feeling as I've been in your position.

But after years of experimenting and hard work finding the right diet in order to clear the psoriasis that had plagued me for years, I have started to see some positive improvements.

I made the mistake of one Christmas saying to myself "you know what, why should everybody else get to eat what they want and not me.

I told myself, it's not fair and I felt as if the whole world was against me, and foolishly I went crazy that Christmas and completely broke my diet that I'd stuck to for years and not only did my psoriasis all come back in full force.
I ended up with another problem on top of all of this, which was an even bigger problem than my psoriasis, and that problem, was, I started having seizures 

Yep seizures, after being 20 years old and never having one in my life after going crazy with my diet and now was in a worse position than I was all those years ago! So trust me, I know.

What makes this worse is the fact that the main reason I broke away from my diet in the first place is because I was told that food and diet had no effect whatsoever on psoriasis or any skin condition for that matter. 

At the point I was told, diet had nothing to do with psoriasis, and even though I'd already cleared about 80% of my own diet through psoriasis, mistakenly I decided to go against that evidence and also all he clear evidence I'd seen online and what I had read in the psoriasis books.

Other things to take into account regarding beautiful skin

  • Stress
  • Over hyperactivity also can be linked to stress and certain foods
  • MSG and food additives 
  • Keep yourself hydrated as well as consuming the right fluids
  • Natural creams i.e. Aloe Vera
  • Affirmations, visualization, hypnosis cds, meditation, prayer
Persistence, and a process of elimination is the key to your success, it will take time and remember, each sufferer, may have different food triggers, so it might be a case of trial and error, because you will need to find out what foods disagree with you.

Another area where I faulted is, you see these videos online (You Tube) of people with clear skin and you see the before and after shots. 

They explain what they did, you begin to follow their routine and strategy, but after a month or two, you see no difference in your skin, nothing, no improvements, so you label it as useless "what's wrong with my body, why does it work for them, but not mine right?" 

Yes, I've been there as well. Like I previously said with my skin "condition" it took years before I started to make significant progress. 

Then of course I achieved a good level of success, then I went and ruined it all, by eating too much of the wrong foods for me, and I ended right back at square one and I have made this mistake many times since.

What you have to watch out for is, it can take months to see the results that you want, but it only takes a few days of eating your trigger foods to ruin all your hard effort, so if you want to clear your psoriasis, then a certain amount of self discipline is required.

You will need a positive attitude and positive intentions

Before you go about attempting to cure your psoriasis you need to enter into it with the right positive mindset and attitude and send yourself a strong intention, that you will clear your skin no matter what it takes.

You can do it because others have already successfully overcome their psoriasis.

If you focus on how bad your skin is, then this will hold you stuck in a negative state, therefore it can help to accept what is at the moment, then start to develop a more positive outlook of optimism so you can get rid of all the negativity that you have attached to your psoriasis.

Like most problems, it won't happen overnight, but if you make healthy diet and lifestyle changes, then as long as you stick with them you can control and eliminate it. 

So the first thing you really need to do is fully accept your skin condition, so you get rid of the fear of and frustration of it, because fear leads to stress and stress acts like a toxin to your body and your skin.

Try not to see it as something bad that you have to live with for the rest of your life, just view it as a temporary condition that you can and will in time overcome.

Although this scaly skin condition was once thought to be untreatable, many people are now successfully learning how to control it and clear it up permanently. 

You might not be able to eliminate it genetically, but you can clear it up and keep it under control once you tackle the root source of it and you stick to your new healthy lifestyle changes.

It is now thought that psoriasis can be activated by an allergic reaction to either certain foods, some detergents, some shampoo's, cloths dyes and skin products or other man made substances and material things can aggravate it. 

Although it seems to be mainly a diet and allergy related problem, it is still important to learn how to control your emotions and learn ways to reduce your stress levels. 

Try and think positive and optimistic thoughts, ignore the bad as much as possible, including any negativity you have about your psoriasis condition and only focus on the end result which is clear and radiant skin.

Healing Psoriasis Treatments Starts From Within

Psoriasis has been associated with toxins in the blood stream which filter out through the skin and manifest itself in the form of red and inflamed looking lesions and scaly skin patches. 

This indicates that it is not something that can just be successfully treated by only applying lotions onto the skin infected area's alone. 

Lotions and creams can help reduce the inflammation, but this alone is not always enough and to stop it returning, you may have to deal with the root cause of it which means considering changing your dietary habits as well. 

If you want to get rid of weeds you have to pull them up by the roots, if you just cut off the tops they will keep on returning, the same analogy applies to your skin if you don't deal with the roots of the problem and you only deal with the surface the red scaly patches will keep on returning.

The buildup of toxins in the digestive system filters out into the bloodstream, which eventually manifests itself in the form of the red scaly patches on the skin. 

The new approach to curing psoriasis is to cleanse the body and digestive system so you flush out the bad bacteria and toxins and then you correct the digestive system by changing your diet.

Unwanted toxins in the body are mainly due to certain foods, but too much stress and negative emotions can also cause a buildup of unwanted toxins. 

Always work with your doctor and dietitian, however many people are now finding relief through changing their diet and using natural none chemical moisturizers, home remedies and lotions.

Natural help that can help you reduce your psoriasis

Putting chemical based products and skin care creams on your skin is believed to be a contributor too aggravate psoriasis, therefore it is advisable to keep your skin well moisturized with healthy, natural creams, what you need to try and avoid is putting on creams that contain any form of chemicals.

Because this can lead to the drying out of the skin due to all the chemicals and detergents people apply to their bodies each day. 

As a result this can cause the skin to lose its natural oils which can inflame the psoriasis.

Mostpeople apply a numerous amount of chemical based creams, soaps, bubble baths, moisturizers each day which cause the skin to dry out and deplete the bodies natural oils. 

Many people are turning to natural oils to treat the scaly patches on their skin. 

It may be beneficial for you to tackle your problem on several separate levels, this includes dealing with the physical symptoms,both internally and externally as well as tackling the emotional side of things. 

Swap to a natural chemical free soap and body lotions, you need to keep your skin moisturized and prevent it drying out.

Apply a non chemical based moisturizer straight after your bath or shower to help seal the moisture in. 

You can also apply a moisturizer during the day. The moisturizer should be chemical and fragrance free and although fragrance smelling moisturizers are popular they're not always kind to your skin. 

Natural lotions that you can use to apply on your skin

Although you need to heal from within, you can help ease the inflammation by applying certain natural oils and creams, prescription creams do help but they should only be used as a temporary measure, your doctor can also prescribe psoriasis friendly shampoo and body soaps.

It may pay to alternate the oils you apply on your skin so the psoriasis cannot get used to the same product. Some natural oils that people recommend are olive oil, coconut oil, neem oil, tea tree oil. 

Applying aloe vera gel to the inflamed area can also help according to Dr. Andrew Weil. 

He suggests that you should apply the pure aloe vera gel 3 times a day, most people who have used aloe vera gel have reported a big improvement in their condition after about four weeks.

People have had success with reducing the inflammation by applying coconut oil on the red patchy areas externally. 

One of the more successful natural treatments which is forever growing in popularity with many sufferers is glycerin. 

A lot of people are reporting that they are seeing big improvements in reducing the inflammation after applying glycerin to the infected area, it may take a few weeks to see improvements but the feedback for glycerin is very positive and encouraging.

Another natural remedy that is helping people to treat their psoriasis is apple cider vinegar, this is the only vinegar that is recommended and all other vinegar's should be avoided if possible. 

Many reports by sufferers claim that apple cider vinegar, which is classed as natures natural wonder tonic has helped many long time suffers to reduce their inflammation after all else had failed. 

You can take two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar diluted in a glass of water once a day, some people are adding a spoonful of honey to help it taste sweeter. 

Some people also apply cider vinegar diluted in lukewarm water externally, putting it directly to the infected areas, it should only be used externally as a temporary measure. 

Salmon is also believed to be beneficial because of its natural anti inflammatory properties. 

Although these external lotions can help soothe and reduce the inflammation to successfully treat your psoriasis it is advisable to look at at alter your diet.

Make Some Lifestyle And Diet Changes

Some medical experts are now looking into the concept that diet definitely does play a significant role contributing to psoriasis after many sufferers claim that a change in diet has helped them control and even eliminate their psoriasis, so long as they remained on the psoriasis free diet.

Personally, I have found that there are a few foods that trigger my psoriasis flare ups, the thing to remember is, psoriasis, is an inflammatory condition, so therefore you want to try and avoid any foods that cause inflammation.

There are two types of foods, in one category you have the inflammation foods and in the other category you have what is known as the cooling foods.

Some of the foods that may aggravate psoriasis

  1. Junk foods-These often contain high levels of saturated and trans fats, which have been linked to inflammation, some junk foods and snacks also contain a high sugar content which can also cause inflammation. Not all fats are bad, omega 3 fats are classed as a very good anti-inflammatory source.
  2. High sugar content foods-Again sugar can cause inflammation, so ideally you want to cut back or minimize your sugar intake, however, low sugar content is sometimes a better option than some of the sugar substitutes and flavoring.
  3. Processed foods-Eating too many processed foods can be bad for the psoriasis sufferer, many processed foods contain high levels of trans fats which are believed to cause inflammation.
  4. Nightshade vegetables- Nightshades and psoriasis seem to be a bad combination, and they are considered to be one of the worst foods for causing psoriasis, these include, white potato, tomato, eggplant, tobacco and peppers. Sweet potato's are permitted, as they can help reduce inflammation
  5. Dairy-Some people can seem to get away with consuming dairy products, whilst others seem to be more sensitive to them, for me, dairy appears to be one of the foods that trigger my flare up.
  6. Gluten- Again, some people seem to be more sensitive to gluten than others so it may be a case of eliminating gluten for a few weeks to see if there is any difference.
  7. White flour-White flour and white grains have been classed as one of the bad foods as far as the psoriasis sufferer is concerned. It may pay you to try and stick to whole grains, the simple formula is to try and eat brown, like brown whole meal bread, brown pasta and brown rice
  8. Red meats-We have all heard of the warnings about eating too much red meat, and red meat is thought to be something that the psoriasis sufferer should try and cut back or eliminate.

I had a bad reaction to too much sugar and too many eggs so some people's trigger foods may vary a bit from the others, the yolks of an egg have been linked to prosiasis and inflammation.

Again, some might get away with eating small amounts of egg each week, whilst others may be OK if they just eat the egg whites.

It can help you to keep a food journal and diary, to try and work out which foods cause your flare ups and which don't.

Sometimes, on their journey to clear skin, they find that their psoriasis can get worse before it gets better, so the important thing is to be persistent and keep working at it, if you have any doubts or you notice your skin getting significantly worse, consult with your dermatologist, dietitian or your doctor.

Some claim that soya aggravates their skin, so it is not a case of one glove fits all, and you may have to eliminate all of the suspect foods, then when things start to improve, you can try adding one of the suspect foods to see if you get any reaction.

So it may benefit you to experiment with your diet, see a professional dietician if you need more help. 

Up until now the conventional way to treat psoriasis was from an external approach only, but it is now becoming apparent that to treat the root source of psoriasis you have to start from within because some psoriasis experts now believe that it is triggered by an in balance in the digestive system. 

To heal your psoriasis you have to supply your body with the right healthy foods so your digestive system can in time heal and repair itself. It may be difficult for you to stick to the diet when your out, but it is important especially during the first few months. 

A change in diet coupled with applying glycerin 2-3 time a day on your skin may well be worth a try, glycerin is cheap to buy, it has no toxins and you can purchase it at your local pharmacist or drug store. 

Once you have your skin under control, keep it well moisturized with natural, nontoxic skin care creams.

Psoriasis and acne have been linked to a lack of zinc, you take a daily zinc supplement, it is now also believes that vitamin D can help to boost your immune system as well as assisting in the prevention of colds and flu's.

Before you take any zinc your vitamin supplements, check with your doctor first because it can be dangerous to consume over the stated daily dose and there is a debate about should you take a zinc supplement or not. 

Omega 3 fish oil is also recommended because it helps to fight off inflammation, milk thistle is also beneficial to help reduce the inflammation. 

Vitamin D can help, you can get it by eating a bowl of cornflakes, which is full of vitamin D along with a little daily sun, but don't overdo the sun bathing.

Vitamin A is also thought to be good to help reduce psoriasis. Vitamin A has been said can play an important role in how quickly skin cells grow and divide, and researchers have suggested that it can slow down and reduce the spread of psoriasis.

Vitamin A is one of three key antioxidants in our diet, the other two are vitamin E and vitamin C, always check with a professional to see the recommended daily dosage of each vitamin.

Good food sources of vitamin A are, 

  • Green leafy vegetables  
  • Sweet potato's
  • Fish 
  • Carrots 
  • Lettuce

It is also recommended to get sufficient good quality nutrients and nourishment, make sure you receive your daily dose of vitamin B.

If you cannot get enough vitamin B from your diet, you can get a supplement, it is also advisable to make sure you consume the recommended daily dose of vitamin C as it can help to boost your immune system. 

Taking probiotics either as a supplement or from probiotic yogurts can help promote friendly bacteria into the gut. 

Avoid too much junk food and high fatty foods, the ideal thing is to strike the right balance of omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids. 

It is believed that fatty acids play a vital role in the body, experts in psoriasis suggest that it is better to consume more of the omega 3 fatty acids and less of the omega 6. 

You can try replacing butter and dairy spreads with olive oil spread, berries are very good for improving your cut.

It is suggested that you try to eat more brown whole grain breads, pasta's and cereals instead of white, rice are a good nutritious food, as is the green leafy vegetables.

Research has suggested that omega 3 fatty acids reduce inflammation while omega 6 can contribute to it, omega 3 is also good for dry skin, fiber is also good for helping to heal your gut.

These does not mean cutting out all fatty acids, some of the healthy fats are essential part of our diet such as fish oil and olive oil. 

The early morning sun can reduce the redness and help to heal psoriasis, be careful not to spend too much time in the sun and definitely to not get sunburned.

Some of the foods that contain a good source of vitamin D are

  • Oily fish rich in omega 3, like as salmon, sardines, herring and mackerel
  • Red meat (can increase psoriasis)
  • Liver 
  • Egg yolks (May not agree with everybody)
Some of the above may aggravate your psoriasis, so you may find a vitamin supplement to help.

Beat Psoriasis the Natural Way

In your home, try to find the perfect temperature. Flare-ups can be caused by changes in the weather or temperatures in your own home. Going from one extreme to the next is never a good thing. 

If possible, try and gradually allow your body adjust to warmer temperatures or colder ones. 

Most of the time is spent at home, school, work or in the office, so if it is possible to keep the room temperature at a comfortable heat, if it's not in your control try not to wear excessive clothing in hot weather and too little in cold temperatures.

It can also pay to avoid any chemicals and pesticides, make sure you thoroughly wash your vegetables, raw is often better as you don't lose the nutrients that are essential for a healthy body and skin. 

Green leafy vegetables can also help to reduce your psoriasis. Raw is the best way to consume vegetables because they lose some nutrients when cooked. Raw vegetables are higher in fiber and are easy for the digestive system to process. 

It is also important to keep your emotions in check as well as learning to reduce your stress levels because the stress hormones cause toxins in the body.

Meditation and relaxing are important in your bid to manage and control your psoriasis, try not to worry as this will just make things worse.

The trick with worrying is, to not try and stop your mind from worrying, just leave your mind alone and let it calm down by itself.

The thing to be aware of with worry and anxiety is, that no amount of worrying or feeling anxious will prevent what you're worrying about from happening, therefore it is best to accept what is or accept the worst case scenario and then just let your worry go.

One important fact that Dr. Pagano states is don't get discouraged if you do not get instant results, the reversing process can take time and in many cases it can get worst before it gets better. 

It may prove hard at first to adjust or stick to the diet, but sometimes it is better to satisfy your body rather that your taste buds.
