Why You Should Not Suppress Your Emotions?

Change Your Emotional State Change Your Life

Our emotional state could be described as. How you feel at any given time and how you feel depends on the images and thoughts that are taking place in your mind, how you are reacting to your current situation and what is going on in your body.

Because of the mind body link. The images and sound taking place in your mind, affect the state of your body and the state of your body (Posture, breathing, adrenaline, muscle tension, facial  expression) influence what is going on in your mind.

This means, the images and sounds in your mind and your physiology and facial expressions all affect your behaviors, how you perform and how successful, happy and confident you are.

It is not our external situations that affect us the most. It is how we react to them, how we react to the contents of our mind and how we go on to perceive our external experiences.

We have all taught ourselves to react stressfully and negatively to certain outside situations, and it will be a great advantage to you, to change the way you react to your external stressful or challenging situation.

You can have exactly the same situation, where different people react differently to it.

If you're feeling anxious or worried about something, instead of carrying on worrying. Pause for a second, put on a big smile, relax your body and take a few slow, deep breaths, then as you're doing this, think about what you were worrying about.

If you want to feel great and function at your peak performance best.

You need to learn how to manage your mind, get into the habit of smiling and keep your body, calm, free of toxins, balanced, tension free as well as providing it with all the essential daily vitamins and minerals.

When we are feeling nervous or anxious, our body reflects this and our mind starts to panic, when it detects anxious physical sensations in the body.

In the case of fear and anxiety. From an evolutionary point of view.

If you were being threatened, adrenaline would be released into your body, your muscles will become tight, your heart beat would speed up and your breathing would speed up.

If the part of your mind that is in control of your fight or flight response, senses any of these physical changes in your body, such as when you're feeling stressed or tense, your mind will become alert to danger and you will start to panic.

The good news is, if you put on a big smile, you start to take some slow, deep breaths and you release and tension in your body, you will be mimicking the state of calm and safety, so your mind will perceive this, everything must be OK.

When you are feeling tense and stressed, you will also experience other negative emotions, such as frustration, desperation and disappointment.

This can trick you into thinking you have to try harder or make you believe that you're a failure, which can reflect out into your external reality.

Anybody can feel better, anybody can improve on what they are doing or achieve, be or have anything that they want, if they relax, let it go, get out of the way and just trust and allow things to happen naturally.

Moving away from negative states and moving into good feeling states

All though there are many ranges of emotions that we experience, it largely boils down to two categories, positive emotions and negative emotions.

Negative thoughts and feelings will diminish you of your powers, leave you feeling helpless and disempower you tremendously, whilst positive thoughts and feelings will empower you tremendously and give you hope and optimism.

If you can learn to accept at surrender to what is and what has happened, and you find a new sense of hope, optimism and resourcefulness whilst you're staring adversity in the face, then nothing can stop you.

Everybody wants to feel great, but many people get stuck in the negative ranges.

Negative experiences affect our mind and physiology, and when our physiology changes to the states associated with fear, sadness or anger, we tend to get stuck in a loop and vicious cycle of more negative thoughts, feelings and behaviors.

Negative feelings and emotional stress, not only affect your emotional well-being and your behaviors, they are also potentially very damaging to your health.

There are two ways you can change your emotional state. Change your thoughts/change the way you react to the contents of your mind or change your physiology.

"Those who master their thoughts and emotions, win at life".

Are you in control of your thoughts, feelings and emotions, do you drop straight off to sleep and jump out of bed feeling energized, happy and looking forward to the day ahead.

Or is life getting you down, is your mind flooded with negative thoughts and are your emotions and thought patterns running the show?

Because one of the biggest problems for most people around the world is emotional trauma and emotional issues.

Emotional trauma can negatively impact your work, your social life, your confidence, health and your ability to function at your peak efficiency and brilliant best.

We all have. Bad, upsetting, embarrassing and terrifying stuff, that happens to us, but the real problem occurs when we allow our negative experiences to affect our now and our future.

Many of us are harboring deep seated emotional traumas and limiting negative thinking patterns that hold us in a state of fear and negativity.

Often, these stem from our early childhood conditioning or our history of negative life experiences and often they get buried inside of us.

People try all sorts of things in their attempt to numb, distract themselves from or suppress their  feelings and emotions.

Some people will go to drastic measures, often doing things that can be damaging to their health, just to try and deal with their negative feelings and stress.

Most people do not know how to manage their emotions. After all, nobody teaches us how to manage the most important things in our lives, our mind and our emotions.

At best, people rely on coping tactics, things or strategies that just mask the problem and only give them a bit of temporary relief.

Others will try to fight with, resist or deal with their feelings and emotions. However, this approach, will just cause more emotional arousal and momentum.

The thing is. You cannot run away from your emotions, hide from or bury your emotions.

If you try to suppress or bury a negative emotion. They will become part of your system and a part of you.

Strong negative emotions, that have not been released, expressed or processed, can result in health related problems, stress, anxiety and well-being issues.

There is a direct link between our emotions and our whole physiology.

Emotional trauma and upsetting memories, are the root cause of many intrusive thoughts, obsessive behaviors, fears, phobia's and much more.

You have probably said to yourself many times. Why is it so difficult for you to let go of your emotions, and you just want to feel good?

The human species, has evolved to think about past experiences that have strong negative emotions and feelings attached to them.

Not only is this bad for our health and well-being, our negative past experiences and programming can affect and influence our.

Learning about your emotions

Fear happens when our and senses and minds detect a perceived potential threat and it is a stressful response to an outside risk of danger. Sometimes the fear can be justified if there is a potential threat, however many people develop a fear of things that pose no genuine dangers.

Anxiety is when our mind is anticipating that something bad might happen. Anxiety acts like a risk assessment procedure and it is accompanied by those what if or anxious thoughts or imaginings.

Anxiety can be an indication that you may need to prepare yourself for a forthcoming event, this can be done through visualization techniques or taking some forms of physical action.

We often feel anxious because we fear being embarrassed, humiliated or we feel as if we cannot cope or handle a challenging situation. Always see challenges as something that you can overcome.

In most cases of fear, people are more afraid of the sensations of fear, than they are of the thing or situation.

The more you can learn to relax as well accepting and tolerate, feelings of discomfort, without reacting, the less trouble you will have with it and the, shorter in duration it will be.

Being mindful of what is happening in our mind and body, and immediately focus on relaxing or something else, and changing your physiology, can help you to reduce your fear and anxiety.

Anger occurs when somebody has done something to upset you, stepped over your boundaries, or they are not conforming to your beliefs or standards.

Sometimes anger is also a sign of you trying to hide your inner securities. You can either take action, if you feel it is justified, or help it to motivate yourself to stand up for yourself.

However, too much anger is bad for your health and it can get you in a lot of trouble. Ideally, you want to work on not letting yourself get angry in the first place.

Sometimes you have to accept that you cannot always change things or get people to conform to your way of thinking. A far better energy than anger, is to be, calm and assertive or to learn how to, let it go.

Sadness usually indicates that you have lost something that was important to you, or you feel as you can't have or get the things or results that you want the most.

If you know that you cannot get back what you have lost, you sometimes have to accept that it is gone, and try and move on. Get into the habit of focusing on thoughts that make you feel good.

If it is a goal or relationship breakup, you can try and get them back or find new and better ways to get the results or things that you want.

Be grateful for what you have and be grateful for all the good things that are coming your way.

Sometimes low moods can be caused by slouching or leaning forwards, or it could be a sign that you might be sensitive to certain foods or you have a vitamin or mineral deficiency. (Check with a dietician or doctor if you're unsure)

Disappointment sometimes signals, that you have put in the work, but you have not yet reaped the benefits for all your efforts. Or it could mean, that you are not getting what you truly desire.

It is OK to feel disappointed, if you have put in a lot of effort, but you are not getting the results or things that you want, who wouldn't. Just don't stay down for too long.

Sometimes it can mean, that you need to change what you're doing, try and figure it out or change the way you're feeling and thinking.

Frustration is an inner feeling that you are not getting the things or results that you were expecting or hoping for or what you want is not happening for you at the moment.

When you're feeling frustrated it usually indicates that you're trying to hard or you're too worked up and tense.

You can use your frustration to motivate you to do better, but the best way, is to calm yourself down, take a break, and try to analyze where you're going wrong and what you can do, to get better.

Guilt tends to happen when you know that you have done something wrong to somebody or you have done something that is illegal or you know you should not have done it.

You can either apologize for what you have done. You can learn and make sure you don't do the same thing again or you can try and put right your wrong doings.

Whatever happens, you can handle it

Negative emotions are like toxins to the body. Negative feelings usually occur after we have had some bad news, or how we have come to react to outside events or stimuli.

They are usually accompanied with internal matching images and sounds in our minds, which keep the negative momentum, stress and feelings going.

You can also react with stress and anxiety, when you learn that you have to do something or face a stressful and challenging situation, where you think you do not have to confidence or ability to handle it.

To help to calm your anxious or worried mind. Always let you know that, you can handle it or whatever happens, you'll be OK.

You can traumatize yourself, about something that hasn't even happened, or worry endlessly about what might happen, but is unlikely to happen or it won't be as bad as you had imagined.

Instead of focusing on what might go wrong, focus on things going right, and instead of blowing everything out of proportion, focus on what is more likely to happen.

If you are having trouble with negative and suppressed emotions or bad memories, then in your own interests, it is advisable to do some emotional clearing work. (See below)

Devloping a positive mindset

Our emotional traumas, worries, anxieties and issues, can leave us feeling as if there is something wrong with us, or that life and everything is against us.

It is easy to fall into the victim mentality, when you have buried active emotions and thought processes running in your mind and body.

It is not your fault and you are not to blame for your early childhood experiences and conditioning, and it is not your fault if you have been through some upsetting or traumatic experiences.

But if you want to be free from your negative past. You must, take full responsibility for your feelings and emotions, and resolving your problems.

Otherwise, you will continue to remain a victim to our past and our current circumstances, and there is a big difference between, being a victim of your past circumstances and holding on to a victim mindset.

What has happened to you in the past, cannot be changed. What can, and what needs to be changed, is how you now react to your negative experiences and whether or not you process and release the emotion.

Your outside negative experiences can only hurt you once. What hurts you afterwards, is all the thoughts and perceptions that you have about your negative experience.

Sometimes you just have to accept and surrender to what is and what has happened, so you can let go of your suffering and move forwards in a new and exciting positive direction.

When we are in a good place of inner peace and emotional and physical balance and harmony. Our energy will flow freely around our body.

When we are feeling negative emotions. This will split our energy.

Suppressed and negative strong emotions, when they come to surface of your mind, will cause a disruption in your energy system

Every time that you have a negative thought, the neural connections and energy charge will strengthen.

Unless you are mindful, one negative thought usually leads to another similar negative thought which starts a self perpetuating cycle of more negative thoughts and feelings.

One way to get out of the negative thinking mindset, is to become more mindful of the things and  thoughts that are making you feel bad.

Only you can change the way you think and react to a situation or the contents of your mind.

People can advise you, but in the end, it all comes down to you to change. A good place to start is to get into the habit of thinking better feeling thoughts.

If you're feeling unhappy, change the internal dialogue in your mind or pick a better feeling thought and then build on it.

You can think, general feeling thoughts, without tying them to any external conditions.

"All is well.
I am on the right track.
 I am doing extremely well.
Look how far I have come.
Aren't, I having a good time.
Wouldn't it be nice, If I am where I am and all is well.
Things are going well for me.
Things always work out for me.
Life is is always good for me".

Esther Hicks.

Thoughts come before reality, there are no limitations or restrictions in your inner world, unless you choose to make them or put them on your way.

A strong desire can move mountains

One of the most potent positive word or thought is desire. Because when you desire something, and this applies to negative desires as well as positive desires.

This will set the universal energy forces into motion and action. Develop a strong and a burning desire for what you want the most.

Expectation, is also one of the most powerful of energies of creation. Again, this works both ways, meaning you can have positive expectations and negative ones, both are equally as powerful.

Learn to
  • Expect with confidence
  • Expect without doubt
  • Expect with certainty
One of the reasons why people fail to get the things and the life they want is because, they feel disappointed or frustrated, because they are not yet getting the things or results that they expect or want.

Too much frustration and disappointment, can indicate that you're trying to hard or you're too desperate.

This means you're putting out the energy of you not having or it is not happening for you, so you will get more of the not having or happening or you don't trust it will happen.

When you expect without doubt and with a strong faith and certainty, that what you want is coming, even if it has not yet happened, then at some point you will get what you want.

When you add positive emotion to the words you speak or the thoughts you think, you will start to attract the things you desire, quicker.

Letting go of negative emotions

Our emotional health and well-being, depends a lot on if our current needs are being met, our thoughts, and our perceptions.

It is better to tolerate your feelings temporarily instead of trying to deal with them, resist them, suppress, them or block them out.

The worse thing you can do is to bottle up your feelings or try to resist them.

If you feel disappointed, allow yourself to feel disappointed. If you feel sad, allow yourself to feel sad, if you feel anxious, allow yourself to feel anxious and if you feel frustrated allow yourself to feel frustrated and so on.

Because the easier option, is to feel the feelings for a few minutes, without judging and without reacting and when the emotion has faded away, then decide what you're going to do.

You can either choose to
  1. Let the emotion come up through you and away
  2. You can express your emotion
  3. You can take some form of action
Never resist your feelings and emotions. Always acknowledge them and feel them. If you resist your emotions and feelings, they will persist.

So, acknowledge the feeling, then immediately, state how you want to feel.

You can say to you

"Yes, I am feeling anxious, how I want to feel is peaceful and calm"
"Yes, I am feeling sad, how I want to feel is happy and cheerful"

Many people worry about
  • Being embarrassed
  • Making a mistake
  • Being laughed at
  • Being ridiculed
  • Being judged
  • Being criticized
  • Being different
  • Not being capable
Some people will go to drastic preventive measures or avoidance tactics to prevent these things from happening to them.

But when you constantly worry about these types of things happening to you, it causes you endless stress and anxiety.

It is fine to want to come across well, but you should not care or worry too much about the above things from happening.

Very young children to not fear being judged, showing themselves up and they do not care what others think of them.

Some of the root causes of our negative feelings and emotions are
  1. Anger
  2. Disappointment
  3. Feeling vulnerable
  4. Sadness
  5. Embarrassment
  6. Feeling Helpless
  7. Shame
  8. Insecurity
  9. Feeling we cannot cope or handle a situation
  10. Frustration
Sometimes our emotional experiences can be our best teachers as they can motivate us to do better or to learn an important message.

Our emotions can give us an insight into our inner world. Although you can ignore your emotions and feelings.

Sometimes they can be sending you an important message from your inner self. Depending on the particular emotion, they could be telling you that.
  • You need to do some preparation work, for a forthcoming situation
  • It could be a chance for betterment
  • You might need to make a decision or choice
  • They could be telling you, you are not being true to who you really are
  • You might just need to express the emotion
  • You might need to take some form of action
  • You might need to do some emotional clearing work
  • You might need to care less
  • Use it to motivate you
Changing your state

Negative emotions are not just feelings, they are also physical states. This may mean that you will need to reduce your stress levels, symptoms of anxiety and release any tension in your body

This may involve doing activities like exercising and relaxing. Your posture can also have a major influence on how you feel and perform.

Other things that can affect the way you feel are
  • Food intolerance/sensitivity
  • Nutrient deficiency
  • Dehydration
Ideally you want to stand and sit upright, poised and balanced. But comfortable and without stiffening. Our posture can have a profound impact on our mindset, confidence and how we feel.

What we dislike the most is, the unpleasant physical feelings in our body that are generated by our emotional responses.

Because of the mind body connection. The unpleasant feelings and bodily sensations that we experience, can make what we are thinking about or what we are perceiving, feel very real.

Again, due to our body reacts to the contents of our mind and our mind matches the feelings and emotions that we are experiencing.

If you have tense related thoughts, your body will feel tense. And if your body is tense, you will have more tense related thoughts.

Our mind is always trying to make sense of the sensations that are occurring in our body.

Again, if you are feeling stressed and tense, because these feelings are linked to your fight or flight response.

Your body will interpret this as, something bad is about to happen, otherwise, why is your body in, fight or flight mode.

When your mind detects, any stressful sensations, anything different or things in your body that are linked to your flight or fight mechanism, your mind becomes alert and it immediately starts to react with panic.

If you're feeling anxious. You can trick your mind into accepting that you are safe. By mimicking you natural, calm state.

All you have to do is. Take some slow, deep breaths, relax your shoulders, hum or sing to yourself and put on a big smile, as all of these are linked to, all is well.

Because your mind will see it as. You must be safe, because if you were being threatened, you would not be cheerful, relaxing and smiling.

Changing your limiting beliefs

Sometime you may need to explore the emotions you're feeling. Ask yourself,
  • What am I worrying about?
  • What am I feeling angry about?
  • What am I feeling sad about?
  • What am I feeling anxious about?
Try and pinpoint the belief behind your fears and anxiety and what does it say about you.

Find out and identify the emotion, logical reason or belief behind your fears and worries. Then decide, what you need to work on.

Change or replace and limiting or negative beliefs to their polar positive opposite

Let you know, how you intend to be.

Tell yourself, you can learn, you are capable or define how you're going to be or set your new positive intentions

Like, I am going to be
  • Calm and composed under pressure
  • More confident
  • Stronger and more courageous
  • Successful
When you are experiencing unpleasant feelings, Try to identify, which emotion you're feelings, and if you can, try and find out, the reason why you feel the way you do.

Sometimes, the emotion you're feeling will develop into a physical symptom in your body.

Such as muscle tension, headaches, tightness in the chest (consult your doctor immediately if you severe tightness of the chest), upset stomachs and digestive issues, racing heart, nervousness, shallow breathing and tearful.

You can trace the emotion you're feeling back to the situation that triggered it.

Become mindful to the onset of anything that makes you feel bad. Do not attempt to suppress the emotion.

If you can, find somewhere quiet. Then, take some slow, deep breaths, making the out breath longer than the in breath.

Relax your body and release any tension. Keep focused on your breathing and try and bring yourself back to the present moment.

Scan your body for any area's of tension, and slowly release any tension.

Just see the feelings as energy fluctuations and observe the feelings and continue to feel them, without making any attempt to change them.

Later on, when you're at home. You can write down how you were feeling, just carry on describing what you were feeling, experiencing and thinkings.

Do not try and force it, just write down what comes into your mind, as this can help you to express and process your emotions.
